Fit for summer… Fit for life!
Getting into shape for Summer…
It’s difficult for most of us with families and busy lives to even think about exercise but if you can find the time you will definitely feel better for it.
Just 5 weeks in to my quest and i’m feeling great already, a month from now i’ll be taking part in the Yorkshire 10k Mud Run 11th May at Temple Newsam Park, Leeds.
I challenged myself so I had something to work towards and although i’m far from fit, i’m getting there slowly but surely. The run will be challenging but i’m sure it will be a lot of fun at the same time.
I’m going to be writing about my progress here over the coming weeks and will share my thoughts, ideas and tips on exercise, diet and nutrition that will hopefully inspire our readers to shape up for summer and of course for life.
After a few weeks in the Gym (Nuffield Health at Cottingley) early morning walks and runs with my dogs and now even earlier morning Boot Camp with Commando Fit at Roberts Park Saltaire, I’m already feeling so much better.
This may sound pretty hardcore but I was and still am pretty unfit, with a little determination and of course some hard work – you too could make a huge difference in the way you look and feel.
Through most of my 20’s I was fairly athletic (I had lots of time for sporty suff) but now in my 40’s i’ve struggled to keep active for the last 10 years or so.
I’ve never worried too much but have slowly been gaining weight fro the last 10 years – easy to do if you lead a busy life, have kids, run a business or work hard, like nice food and of course a drink or two now and again.
I tried a couple of diets last year in the run up to my wedding. First I tried the 5:2 diet then the Alternate Day Fasting, both intermittent fasting diets. Then I tried the Paleo Diet – i’ll talk more about these another time.
I did pretty well loosing close to two stone before my big day… Problem is, it wasn’t sustainable and as soon as life went back to normal I started putting it back on again.
I also stopped smoking last August after over 20 years of smoking 40 plus cigarettes a day. Of course this also had an effect on my weight. On a positive note though, I do feel much healthier for not smoking.
Quitting smoking was a pretty big deal for me and although i’m still using an electronic cigarette, I am reducing my nicotine intake month by month. I’ll talk more about this later too, as it may help other smokers to quit.
So this year my aim is to Get Fit and Stay Fit!
At my starting point in early March I weighed around 15 stone, I’ll give measurements and exact weights later at some point. I suffered from lower back pain and got lots of tension in my neck and shoulders as I sit at a desk most of the day.
Not really built for running, I decided to start simple and get to the gym to tone up a little first. My exercise journal will give more detail about what i’ve been doing over the last few weeks and at some point in the future (if I pluck up the courage) i’ll post some before and after pics or pics showing my progress.
Only a few weeks in and my back is much better, i’m feeling stronger, fitter and generally healthier & happier than I have in some years…
I am determined to get back to the shape I was in my 20’s or better, it will be hard, but anything is possible if you put the effort in.
Back soon with my progress, so stay tuned.
